  • L.A.C.K.: Leadership, Accountability, Culture ,Knowledge               3-hour AM class.
  • Is your department on the path to a LODD? This compelling presentation by the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation examines the root causes of LODD’s and the roll of Leadership, Accountability, Culture, and Knowledge as it influences the end result. Many fire departments across the United States “Lack the Right Stuff” to prevent them from being on a path to a line of duty death, with Leadership, Accountability, Culture, and Knowledge being the elements that need to be addressed and managed in those environments. Through education and training, those departments can improve their survivability by understanding the root causes of the firefighter fatalities and tackling these four elements with special emphasis on understanding fire service culture.

  • Instructor: Chief Ron Hines, Huron Fire Department

 

  • L.E.A.D.: Four Steps to Build Quality Leaders and Highly Motivated Followers, 3-hour PM class.
  • This course looks at a variety of leadership issues that affect accountability and safety. Discussion includes the impact of generational change, organizational and interpersonal dynamics, and ten personality types found in the fire service. “L.E.A.D.” forms the foundation of organizational strength to mold high functioning and cohesive teams.

  • Vehicle Extrication, 6-hour class, limit 20
  • This course provides hands-on training for fire and rescue personnel in size-up, stabilization, hazard control, patient access, and disentanglement at automobile crashes. Emphasis is placed on proper choice, placement, and use of equipment available locally. All are employed to think outside the box and complete the extrication with hydraulic tools using the jaws, shears, and rams, along with air bags, cribbing for stabilization along with other tools available.

  • Firefighter Survival/RIT 6-hour class, limit 20
  • Students will be introduced to firefighter RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) training, techniques for developing firefighter survival attitude, identify needed personal equipment, situational awareness, SCBA knowledge and techniques for use in on air emergencies. This course is designed to give the firefighter the confidence to successfully deal with situations that may be encountered in a fire situation. Students will also gain information about air management. This course will use an acquired structure and a series of training props.

  • PPE Required- Full PPE and SCBA (extra cylinder is recommended)
  • Instructors: Jason Mosterd, Burke Fire Department / Mike Jones, DSFM 


  • EV for First Responders, 6-hour class.
  • This class will cover what is coming with new vehicle technology, history of electric vehicles,             systems, safety, battery make-up, chemical make-up of the off gasses, proper way to approach, immobilization, and disable an EV. This class will also cover how to identify, and how to fight a fire involving an electric vehicle.

  • Registration: $15.00 per person.
  • Departments In the Badlands District must pay their 2024 dues of $50.00 per department.
  • Lunch will be provided on site for a free will donation.

Pricing

Your South Dakota Firefighters Association provides $14,000 ($2K per District), per year in financial assistance to help offset the instructional costs of providing Regional District Fire Schools.  We also provide additional financial assistance to help cover the costs of using the MLFTU units at regional events.

  • School Fee: $20.00 per Firefighter
  • Noon Meal: $12.00 per Firefighter
  • Department Dues: $100.00
