Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Safety, 6 hour all day course (no limit)

A look at proper ways to tackle Hybrid/Electric vehicle extrication. The do’s and don’ts of how to extricate patients from Hybrid/Electric vehicles. Also, there will be discussion about how to safely fight a Hybrid/Electric vehicle fire.

Instructors: Darrell Hartmann, Brookings (retired) / LeRoy Ainslie, Fedora Fire Department

Heavy Vehicle Extrication, 6 hour all day course (limit 20)

This course will cover rescue and extrication activities related to large, commercial style vehicles. Cribbing basics, tool selection, load assessment, lifting plans, all the way to complex situations such as underrides, heavy vehicle stabilization, and working with rotating wreckers will be discussed. Hands on opportunities as equipment and vehicles allow after a classroom session. (Full PPE Required)

Instructor: Adam Frick, Yankton Fire Department and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue

SCBA/Ventilation, 6 hour all day course (limit 20)

Training will cover basics of SCBA and Ventilation in the morning classroom. The remainder of the morning and afternoon will be spent in an acquired structure covering search and ventilation. This is hands-on training will utilize cold smoke to simulate and IDLH Atmosphere.  (Structural PPE and SCBA required.)

Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS) 6 hour all day course (no limit)

GEMS provides EMS practitioners at all levels with the skills and knowledge to address the unique medical, social, environmental and communications challenges of older adults. Developed by NAEMT, in partnership with the American Geriatric Society, GEMS empowers EMS practitioners to help improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients.

GEMS features case-based lectures, live action video, hands-on skill stations, simulation, and small group scenarios to fully engage students in the learning experience. GEMS covers the following topics: Changes with age, Assessment of older adults, Pharmacology and medication toxicity, Psycho-social emergencies, Elder abuse, End-of-life care issues, Cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies, Trauma, Neurological emergencies and altered mental status, Mobile integrated healthcare, Special considerations for older adults in disaster response, Skin and wound care, and Medical devices frequently used by older adults.

Two GEMS courses are offered-a core and advanced course. They may be offered separately or sequentially. Both courses are appropriate for EMT’s, paramedics, emergency medical responders, nurses, physician assistants and physicians. GEMS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.
