Controlling the CHAOS (6-hours)

Summary
The fireground can be very dynamic. Whether volunteer or career, it is important that all firefighters have a strong understanding of the job. We all have a role in tactical decisions, accountability, risk reduction and managing the incident. This class is a next step progression for firefighters that may fill a future role as fire service leaders or currently serve as department officers. The class will discuss various incidents and topics will include Scene size-ups, fire behavior, smoke conditions, strategies and tactics, water supply, utilization of outside resources and a strong incident command system. There will be a radio exercise and radios will be provided. This will be an interactive learning opportunity to discuss various ideas and review traditional incident response plans. Prerequisite – None, No class limit Open to all ranks

SCBA Confidence Course (6 hours)

6-hour - all day

Summary
This course is designed to give the firefighter the confidence to successfully deal with situations that may be encountered in a fire situation. Firefighters will practice using the SCBA and will increase comfort and confidence to relate to real-life situations. Students will also gain information about air management **Participants will need to have full structural gear and functional SCBA (extra cylinder is recommended). SCBA bottles will be able to be filled at Aberdeen Fire and Rescue (across the street from school venue) **

Strategy and Tactics for Rural and Suburban Departments (6 hours)

Summary
This class will help the experienced firefighter make tactical decisions throughout an incident. This class will also focus on building construction and water supply considerations in rural and suburban departments. If you are an experienced firefighter or new officer within your organization, this class may be a good fit for you. Prerequisite: None, No class limit. Geared toward the experienced firefighter, but open to all ranks.

Basic Ropes Class (6 hours)

6-hour - all day

Summary
This course is designed to get participants more familiar with ropes and rigging. This course will help you understand knots, rigging systems, harnesses, and everything else rope related. Students will come away with a better knowledge of how to perform basic rope operations and be ready to assist a technical rescue team when they arrive on one of these complex scenes. Prerequisites: None, but an understanding of knots and completion of a SD Certified FF class would be a plus. **Harness, helmet, gloves, and safety glasses are needed to attend this course**

Electric Vehicle Awareness - AM (3 hours)

Summary
Electric vehicles are becoming more visible on our highways and roadways. We as responders need to be aware of how to handle an emergency that involves these vehicles. This course will help responders identify these vehicles and be aware of emergency situations that may involve electric vehicles. Instructors are working to secure some EV’s to provide visual inspections.

EMS Incident Command (3 hours) AM only

Summary
This course is designed to broaden your command skills and understand where EMS fits into a large-scale incident. This course is open to anyone but will have focus on the stand-alone EMS agencies that work with but are not part of Fire Departments. Prerequisite: None, but having ICS100, ICS200, NIMS700 would be a plus

Report Writing - AM only (3 hours)

Summary
This course is designed to help those officers who enter NFIRS reports into the state system. Please bring a laptop or tablet with a keyboard to this class. This class is interactive and will walk you through the reporting steps. Prerequisite: None but would be helpful to be the person or persons who enters these reports.

Summary
This course will be an open discussion about any issues that you or your fire department or EMS service is facing. With the number of demands that are placed on our responders daily, we must communicate with each other and share ideas that might help your neighbors. Focused conversation will be about the generation challenges that we face within our departments, training opportunities for both Fire and EMS, and any other discussion that is brought to the table. We will also touch on some of the resources that are available to new Fire Chiefs and EMS leaders. Prerequisites: None, except bring discussion to the group.
